Yesterday, Portland Fire head coach Alex Sarama and rookie forward Nyadiew Puoch spoke with the media. This piece highlights several quotes from their press scrums.
Alex Sarama on preparing for Wednesday’s preseason opener
How are we feeling?
“Yeah, really well. We had another great practice. Today was a low [volume] day, so we’re just very efficient being in and out of here. We played some low volume five on five, and it was really great to see what emerged within it. Great retention of our principles of play. We put some of our first scout specific in, so getting the team used to how we’re going to run our scouts [or scout team] this year. So yeah, really good practice.”
Alex Sarama on what excites him heading into the preseason
“Yeah, really just excited to see how we play offensively and defensively. I think it’s going to be a very good experiment for us as a staff to try different lineups, try different players in different positions, and it’s still obviously two preseason games. It’s not tons of prep, but it’s going to be useful for us to get a look at some of the lineups. We want to see some of the complimentary actions, the complimentary defensive covers for certain groups. So it’s more of an experiment for us as a coaching staff.”
Nyadiew Puoch on the atmosphere in the locker room
“I think we’re really excited. This trip to Eugene has been really good. We’ve been bonding on and off the court, which is helping us a lot. But I think we’re all really excited for the first game.”
Nyadiew Puoch on training and bonding with teammates
“I think it’s a great bonding session with everyone on the road. New place for everyone. So I think we’re getting along. We’re having a lot of fun. Lots of team bonding sessions we’ve been doing, which is really good, get to know each other, which is good.”
